New York State Council of Operating Room Nurses

Welcome to the New York State Council Website!
HISTORY

The Council of AORN Chapters of New York State was formed as a result of an invitation issued to Ruby Sanchez, RN, President of the New York City Chapter of AORN in January of 1973. Veronica Driscoll, RN, Executive Director of the New York State Nurses Association, (NYSNA), was hosting a meeting of the specialty nursing organizations to discuss the State Alliance of Nursing Organizations, (SANO). That body would function under the umbrella of NYSNA's structure. The purpose of SANO was to strengthen relationships among the organizations and present a unified front as the nursing community in New York State.

On May 7, 1975 the Presidents of seven AORN Chapters met with NYSNA to discuss the concept of SANO including a mechanism for our representation. At the same time the AORN Chapter Presidents discussed the possibility of forming a closer relationship among themselves. This discussion resulted in the formation of the Council of AORN Chapters of New York State.

In 1976 the Council wrote to Veronica Driscoll requesting a formalized structure for SANO with all members being equal. All were in agreement with the rationale and purpose, but opposed the "umbrella" concept.

The Council grew and strengthened. In June 1979 we broke away from SANO to become an independent organization with our own policies.

The New York Council of Operating Room Nurses was the first council of AORN Chapters to form. Since then many states have formed councils modeled after New York.
