The Illinois Council of Perioperative Registered Nurses, welcomes you to our little corner of the World Wide Web. As of October 1, 2008, we have had 7319 hits on our site.

Did you know? According to the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation, there are 157,013 Registered Professional Nurses in Illinois. Of that number, there are 1757 perioperative nurses that belong to AORN. That means that we'll see at least 1000 of you at the ICORN Fall meeting, right???

ICORN's humble beginnings took root in the early 1980's as an annual breakfast for the Illinois chapters at Congress, and progressed to a formal, organized state council. Roger Stone served as the first chair from 1984-1988.

WANTED!! 2009 Chicago Congress Volunteers

It's time to consider volunteering your time for the 2009 Chicago Congress to be held from March 15-19 at McCormick Place in Chicago.

Volunteers are needed to contribute their time in order to accomplish the tasks that are necessary to make our Congress a success. Any AORN member can volunteer, and it isn't even necessary for him or her to live in Illinois. Our volunteers can be employed, retired, students, first time attendees or those of you who have attenended Congress every year for the last 20 years! Some of the tasks that need to be addressed during Congress week include the following:

Assistance of attendees on the registration floor
Checking in of volunteers, speakers and moderators
Session assistants and moderators
Helping with the first-timer's breakfast
Directing attendees to sessions
Escorting students at the trade show
Helping at our fund-raising table

As you read this, please share with your chapter colleagues and encourage anyone who is coming to Congress to consider giving a couple of hours of their time to volunteer. Chapter emails, websites, newsletters and chapter meetings are all venues for spreading the word.

Please email me or call me at 815-436-2286 with questions and that all-important offer to volunteer to make the Chicago, ILLNIOS Congress the best yet! We need at as many volunteers as possible, and no one will be turned away.

Congress Pins and Attire

The Chicago Congress pin, not to be confused with the ICORN pin, will be a 1 1/2 inch sparkling cystal shamrock which will be sold for $10.00. We are hoping that they arrive in time for Leadership on July 25.

On a serious note: during the spring meeting that was held in Anaheim, many chapters offered "seed" money in order to get the pin sales started. ICORN offers it's sincere thanks to the chapters who responded. In order for this pin sale to be a success, we need the money that was promised in order to have enough pins to sell.

Email
Wanda Dunkel with any questions regarding the pin.

Volunteer host attire will be a simple, but pretty scarf...green sharmocks on either a white or black background. I will have 175 available at Leadership for $2.00. There will be no choice of color background. Gentlemen will be offered a pocket square made from the scarf material for $1.00, and will be asked to purchase their own tie. The tie should have kelly green in it. It may be shamrocks, navy and kelly striped...anything of your choosing as long as kelly is a prominent color. If your chapter is not represented at Leadership, you can email Donna Preisler to order scarves/pocket squares for your Chapter. Payment must be made in advance, and scarves/pocket squares will be picked up in the Volunteer office at Congress.

If you love nursing politics, NIWI may be for you. If so, Sophia Schild and Pam Appleton would love to mentor you in your quest. You can contact them by emailing either Sophia or Pam.

The PIN

THE ICORN PIN IS A REALITY! Sister Trudy O'Connor worked diligently get the business finalized that has given us a pin that ICORN members can proudly wear to identify themselves when attending AORN functions such as Congress. You can preview the pin here.

The pin will cost $5.00, and will be available through your individual chapters. Chapter presidents should have received details and we will all have our new pins to wear proudly at Congress in Anaheim!

Making a Difference

This month's AORN Connections features a story showcasing our own Chapter 1411, the Northwest Suburban Chicago Chapter. Jodi Gaski and chapter members have been busy sending care packages to OR colleagues who are deployed to Iraq. These packages go a long way to bring a bit of the comforts of home to those who are treating our soldiers. To Jodi and her Chapter 1411 colleagues, kudos to you!
